The Granular and Disordered Media group of Martin van Hecke investigates the slow flow and jamming of granulates, suspensions and foams. We focus on the interplay between mesoscopic organization and macroscopic flow features, and we combine video imaging with rheological measurements. We work closely together with the theory group of Vincenzo Vitelli, formerly headed by Wim van Saarloos. Topics we are currently working on include the flow and yielding of agitated granular media, imaging dense suspension flows in 3D, sound in sand and the fluctuating flow of foam.
