With the help of a laboratory-scale experiment we studied how objects in outer space which "twist" light, such as rotating black holes, could be investigated from earth by observing light's orbital angular momentum in an astronomical telescope. The light is considered to come from a star behind the light-twisting object, and we address here the problem that stars emit spatially incoherent light in contrast to an ideal point source. In this case, the situation is much more complex as there are no simple formulas to calculate how the light propagates, in particular if we are interested how the spatial correlations are modified by our light-twisting astronomical object. But we were able to find a simple intuitive model that agrees well with our experimental data and numerical simulations; this allows us to give guidelines for future astronomical observations. We find that this will be a tough but very interesting challenge.
