Travel Directions - By Train

The Leiden Institute of Physics in easily reached from Leiden Central Station. Leiden is well connected by train to Schiphol Airport (20 min), Amsterdam (30 min), Rotterdam (30 min), The Hague (15 min) and destinations further afield. Schedule your itinerary at the Dutch Railways (NS).


From Leiden Central Station you can arrive to the institute in the following ways.



By public bus

For the bus station outside the Leiden train station, exit the station by the entrance marked for the city center. You will find the bus station immediately on your right. Signs over the platforms indicate which bus route number will arrive next at any platform. You may board bus nr 57 or 43. These buses leave from the station half hourly and the trip takes about 5 - 10 minutes. Make sure that you board the bus for the correct direction.


  • Bus no 57 for final destination Nieuw Vennep. Get off at the stop called "Corpus" just before a sharp bend in the road to the right. The Oort building is the grey slanted building in front of you.
  • Bus no 43 for final destination Den Haag Central Station. Get off at the stop "Universiteitsterrein". Walk on along the Einstein road which passes the mushroom shaped building and continues behind the Huygens laboratory. Turn right into the Niels Bohrweg. You will already see the characteristic slanted Oort building behind the Huygens lab. The entrance is at the other side of the building, in front of a large parkinglot.


You can buy a one-way ticket in the bus. If you plan to use public transport several times during your stay, you can buy a "OV Chip card" at the train station.


On foot

Leave the station at the exit marked "LUMC hospital". From there on it is about 25 minutes walk to the Leiden Institute of Physics; you might want to bing a copy of the map.



By ‘Bio Science Park’ Shuttle

The BSP Shuttle is a free service for the exclusive use of staff and visitors of companies based at the Bio Science Park, including the Leiden Institute of Physics. Exit the train station by the back entrance, named the "LUMC zijde". The BSP Shuttle stop is just outside the station, opposite the "Poortgebouw" building, and is signposted “Bio Science Park Shuttle”. The BSP Shuttle runs on a continuous loop around the park. To arrive, get off at BioPartner (Niels-Bohrweg 11-13). From there on walk 15 meters and on the right side you will see the main entrance of the Oort building.


The BSP Shuttle runs on all working days and leaves every 15 minutes between the following hours:

• Mornings : 07.00 – 09.00 hrs.
• Afternoons : 16.00 – 18.00 hrs.


By taxi

Taxis are located on the front side of the station, in the direction of "Centrum Leiden". After exiting the station you see the taxis on your left-hand side. Use the regular taxis rather than the "trein/taxi". It costs about 15 euro to get to the Leiden Institute of Physics.
